ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said automated cameras, including the red-light cameras seen across the city in previous years, could be making a comeback. This, he said, is an effort to curtail pedestrian crashes and fatalities. "We're not at that point yet, but we're talking about it," said Mayor Evans, "Obviously, we have less people working in our police department doing traffic. So, we have to look at what other cities are doing from an automated standpoint." The measure would be part of the mayor's 'Vision Zero' plan to help put an end to traffic deaths and injuries. According to the state, 12 pedestrians were killed in Monroe County in 2023, and more than 250 pedestrians were injured. "We think there needs to be a comprehensive approach to addressing our traffic safety crisis. The City of Rochester announced earlier this year the commitment to 'Vision Zero.' There are different kinds of cameras that can be explored as part of the initiative. The city has already authorized the bus stop arm cameras, so that was a good step in that direction," said Cody Donahue, director of policy and advocacy for Reconnect Rochester. Community groups like Reconnect Rochester are in favor of the number of routes the city could take. "The bottom line is a number of hit-and-runs and crashes are totally out of control. We had someone killed on Gregory St. just a couple of days ago. Driving, speeding, running red lights, and running stop signs are all things people in this community are tired of. So, we're going to look at everything above the sun to see what we can do to bring down traffic crashes," said Mayor Evans. Advocates like Reconnect Rochester say it will require community feedback in the days ahead.
