A group of more than 120 organizations known as the Kentucky Cancer Consortium has published what they call a comprehensive blueprint for reducing cancer in the commonwealth by 2030. Elaine Russell is director of the consortium, which was formed in 2001. She said the new Kentucky cancer action plan is their first comprehensive update in about two decades. “It provides a road map to let partners know that other partners are interested in moving in the same direction. So we’re trying to get everybody who is working on cancer in the state, working together so we can go together farther, faster.” Russell said their updated plan covers a wide variety of topics, from reducing smoking to helping farmers grow crops other than tobacco. “We’re looking for the policy, systems and environmental changes that can make a big impact over multiple cancers, over the cancer continuum, and the cancer continuum works on reducing the risk of cancer and making sure that everybody has the ability to have screening and the best treatment available.” Russell said the Kentucky Cancer Consortium meets in person and publishes a newsletter to let partners know what each of them are doing.
