More winter cold on the horizon
Dec 03, 2024
It’s been a very winter-like start to December here in Central and Eastern Kentucky as another clipper system dropped a light coating of snow to begin the week. As is typically the case the stubborn cloud cover and low level moisture stuck around for a while on this Tuesday with a few flurries squeezed out before the drier air worked back into the region. Even with some afternoon sunshine, temperatures struggled to crawl back into the low 30s, keeping us well below average for this time of the year.
Heading into the mid-week high pressure will be centered to our southeast allowing a breezy southwest wind to crank up, pushing more moderate air back into the Bluegrass. With a mix of clouds and sunshine afternoon highs should climb back into the low to mid 40s but it will be a pretty windy day with gusts over 30 miles per hour at times. A fast moving frontal system will be approaching from the northwest so a late day shower can’t be ruled out with better chances into the overnight with a few snowflakes mixed in as more cold air pours into the commonwealth.
It’s going to feel more like the heart of the winter season into Thursday as a reinforcing shot of colder air moves into the area. The combination of the cold air and wind will drop “feel-like” temperatures into the single digits Thursday morning so you’ll need to bundle up heading to work or school. Despite plenty of sunshine expected, afternoon highs will struggle to get out of the 20s with wind chills down into the teens throughout the day! We should see a slight improvement with more sunshine into Friday but the unseasonably cold air will stick around to close out the week with afternoon highs only in the low to mid-30s.
The weekend looks tranquil across the commonwealth with more sunshine expected and slowly moderating temperatures. Afternoon highs will climb back through the 40s with temperatures closer to average by the time the weekend wraps up. A more significant storm system with a better chance of organized rain showers will be possible heading into early next week. A wave of low pressure will slide up from the southwest providing plenty of moisture as a frontal boundary drops in from the northwest. Temperatures should climb into the mid 50s so it should be an all rain event with the potential for a damp and dreary beginning to the week.
