Mungo Homes gives back to four local organizations for “Giving Tuesday”

IRMO, SC (WOLO) — Recognized globally as “Giving Tuesday,” the annual event is dedicated to giving back, and “doing good” across communities.
As part of the movement, Mungo Homes is donating thousands of dollars to four local organizations who help uplift folks throughout the Midlands year round.
“Giving back to our community is something that’s very special to us here at Mungo. We always try to take pride in everything that we do, with building within our communities. We want to have as much outreach within our communities and helping everyone that we can,” says Mungo’s Office Coordinator Jessica Landrum.
First to receive a check was EmmanuWheel, a company that provides wheelchair ramps for people who can’t afford them.
Chris Sharpe, Director with Emmanuwheel, says the money provided will pay for eight ramps, with one ramp costing around $1,200.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to help someone you know they’re in a situation where they’re stuck. They can’t get out of their home, they can’t go out for doctor’s appointments. I’ve seen cases where family members have to put people on their backs just to get them to doctors appointments. A ramp seems so simple but it’s so incredibly life changing for someone who needs it,” he says.
Next up — Home Works of America, an organization that provides free home repairs for low-income households, often times, says Executive Director Madelyn Smith, for homes owned by senior citizens.
“The sense of being able to have a healthy and safe home is of the most value. People love to live in their neighborhoods as long as they can, and so the sense of home this time of year is really important, and this just helps people maintain that,” she says.
Sutton Shaw, Co-founder of Big Red Barn Retreat, says they help Veterans, service members, and First Responders deal with their internal struggles through its onsite programs in Blythewood.
“When someone is willing to give us money to support that, emotionally, you want to believe what you’re doing is right, it’s helping, but that’s a statement from someone on the outside looking in saying we believe in what you’re doing and keep going on, that’s empowering,” she says.
The final check went to Family Promise of the Midlands, an organization that serves families with children experiencing homelessness.
“The support of Mungo Homes and the Michael J. Mungo Foundation has been integral in us being able to support families and the communities in need. So this partnership goes far beyond a check, it’s something where you can really see the associates give back in sweat equity and help the families thrive and move forward to a better future for them and their children,” says Executive Director, Jeffrey Armstrong.
“Giving Tuesday” has been an annual event since 2012.
