LIVINGSTON, La. (BRPROUD) — State and parish leaders are voicing concerns and sharing ideas about littering and how to keep the state clean through the Regional Litter Summits hosted by Keep Louisiana Beautiful. The event united people from law enforcement to parish presidents and more. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser said the goal is to tackle the littering problem and it starts by listening to communities.  "What can we do better? What can we do differently? What do you need? What laws need to be changed? What enforcement needs to be done?" asked Nungesser.  Nungesser said he is taking notes on concerns and has heard a variety from local officials and law enforcement.  "In some of the rural communities that don't have garbage pickup, people are taking garbage and dumping it into the road. We need additional drop-off points in those parishes," he said. "Sheriffs need vans to bring work release people out. We're buying those vans, garbage can grants in certain areas." Baton Rouge children’s museum has fun holiday events for families Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle was at the panel. He said he is bringing ideas back to his community involving the concept of teaching students about litter and getting inside schools to speak about the problem, something other officials said they are doing which is working inside their communities.  "I would love to tie in with the schools," he said. "One of our next tasks is going to be reaching out to the Iberville Parish School System. And can we join as partners and make our community a better, more clean environment and place to live."  Nungesser said littering is costing Louisiana millions of dollars each year. He hopes the summits encourage everyone to step up. "We've got to keep our foot on the gas and we're going to clean up Louisiana," he said.  Nungesser along with Keep Louisiana Beautiful will host two other summits this month on Monday, Dec. 9 in Eunice and Wednesday, Dec. 18 in Harvey.  For more information on how to help tackle the litter issue in the state, click here.
