Man gets life term for New Year's Eve 2020 murder in south Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man who was 17 when arrested in connection with a deadly shooting on New Year's Eve 2020 was sentenced Tuesday to a life term in prison.
Vincent Hines, 21, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, plus 20 years. He was found guilty in October of all charges, including first-degree murder and robbery.
After imposing the life term, Judge Brian M. McNamara commented on the actions that led Hines to this point.
"The thing that just hits you is that this was so pointless," McNamara said. "Pointless. Just a waste."
Hines and co-defendant Anthony Daniel were convicted in separate trials in the death of Emmanuel Arechiga, 18. Daniel, the shooter, was sentenced in 2022 to 69 years to life in prison.
At Tuesday's hearing, Hines' public defender, Teryl Wakeman, asked the judge to sentence his client to a total of 15 years in prison, saying it better reflects his involvement.
"It wasn't his finger that pulled the trigger," Wakeman said.
He also noted Hines was a minor when the shooting occurred, and had experienced numerous difficulties in his life -- emotional abuse and neglect, physical abuse, parental separation and mental health challenges.
In response, prosecutor Cole Sherman said Hines, while not the shooter -- "planned, orchestrated and masterminded" the robbery that led to Arechiga's death. He said Hines and Daniel were both armed, and Hines was a major participant in the crime.
Hines was "absolutely responsible" for the murder, Sherman said.
Additionally, Hines had numerous disciplinary write-ups during his time in the Youth Detention Center, the prosecutor said. Among them were reports of fighting, making threats, stealing staff property and "gang-related conduct," he said.
The shooting
Prosecutors said Hines used Snapchat to set up Arechiga, who was looking to purchase a gun. Hines and Daniel met Arechiga and Arechiga’s girlfriend, instructing them to drive into an alley near Morin Court in south Bakersfield to complete the transaction.
Once in the alley, Hines and Daniel demanded Arechiga hand over his car keys, phone and money at gunpoint, according to prosecutors.
The vehicle rolled forward and Daniel fired a shot through a rear passenger window that struck Arechiga in the back. Prosecutors said Hines took Arechiga’s wallet and he and Daniel fled from the scene.
Arechiga’s girlfriend was able to dial 911 and managed to drive to a nearby park where Arechiga was pronounced dead.
