Biden's pardon of his son draws scrutiny

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The president's pardon of his son is continuing to draw scrutiny from both sides of the aisle.
The sweeping pardon of Hunter Biden is getting backlash from Republicans and some Democrat lawmakers after the president said for months, he wouldn't pardon him.
"He simply went back on his word,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas.).
Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn is one of many Republicans calling out President Biden for pardoning his son.
"This is blatant corruption and abuse of the office,” Cornyn said.
While Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) added, "If it was my son, I'd pardon him too. But here's what I didn't like, don't lie to us."
Hunter Biden was set to be sentenced later this month over gun and tax convictions, but the president issued a pardon Sunday.
"I will not pardon him,” said Biden back in June.
The reversal has led to criticism from his own party. Colorado Democratic Congressman Jason Crow calling it a "mistake" on X and Senator Michael Bennet writing, "President Biden's decision put personal interest ahead of duty and further erodes Americans' faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all."
The White House says the president believes the charges against Hunter were politically motivated.
"They targeted him because his last name was Biden,” said Jean-Pierre.
The pardon covers not just the gun and tax convictions, but any federal offenses Hunter may have committed over the past decade.
President Biden has not explained why he changed his mind but said in his statement Sunday he hopes, "Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision."
