Serenity Towers residents forced to bundle up as heating and power issues persist
Dec 03, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Seniors at Serenity Towers say they're wearing coats inside their own apartments just to keep warm because the heat still isn't working inside the taxpayer-funded high-rise.
They are left to bundle up inside because according to Serenity's attorney, the complex is simply out of funds to make payments.
That, along with other issues, is expected to be brought up as attorneys for the troubled high rise and the city head back to environmental court on Tuesday.

Last week we learned that hundreds of elderly and disabled residents could be left in the cold and dark if MLGW shuts off power to the complex.
The building has a cut-off notice for Wednesday because the company in charge didn't pay the bill.
The special master Marcus Ward, who is appointed to get all the court cases resolved, said he will work on preventing that from happening.

"I don't know how close they were to it happening, but we will make sure that it doesn't happen to them, especially given the forecasted weather events that are happening the next few days," Ward said.
Recently, the city of Memphis stepped in and paid nearly $12,000 to fix broken elevators.
During last week's hearing, the judge allowed the city to appoint a receiver to take control and manage the property while legal issues are resolved.
