COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A years-long effort to transform a Columbus site previously home to a Giant Eagle into a residential development with retail is nearing completion. Named "Jaeger Square," the multi-family development is located at 850 Jaeger St. near the German Village neighborhood and is now accepting leasing applications ahead of the building's spring opening. Pizzuti, the project's developer, said Jaeger Square is meant to combat the city's population growth and to honor "the character and history of a beloved neighborhood." The grocer remained operational for several years but closed in late 2020 after Giant Eagle decided against renewing its lease. Pizzuti's proposal to build Jaeger Square underwent a lengthy approval process, as neighboring residents argued against the development's height and scale. After several contentious neighborhood meetings, the development was approved for construction by Columbus City Council in July 2021. Jaeger Square will also feature 8,000 square feet of retail space along the first floor, and 15,000 square feet of outdoor amenity spaces including a meditation garden, landscaped rooftops, and sidewalk gardens.
