Broncos QB Bo Nix says he’s “good to go” Monday night after hurting back vs. Raiders
Nov 29, 2024
If any doubt lingered about Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix’s status for Monday night, he put it to rest Friday.
“I’m good to go,” he said flatly. “Ready to roll.”
Nix was estimated to be a limited participant in Denver’s Thursday walkthrough because of a back issue but then was a full participant Friday.
He didn’t miss any time in Sunday’s 29-19 victory over Las Vegas, but the broadcast did show him grab at his lower back after he made a throw backpedaling in the face of pressure from Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby. After one of two touchdown passes to Courtland Sutton in the second half, Nix had a wrap placed around his back.
Now Nix will make his Monday Night Football debut against Cleveland.
“Every game is primetime,” Nix said. “Every time you get to put on the helmet and the uniform — it’s a cool uniform this week, by the way — every time you get to do that, it’s special and you don’t want to take it for granted. Playing in the NFL is a special opportunity and each time you get to do it, you just want to maximize it and make the most of it.
“This time the lights happen to be a little bit bright and the sun’s going to be down.”
Not only is it the only time the Broncos are slated for Monday Night Football this year, it’s the first time the franchise has had a home Monday night game since Week 1 of 2020 and the first with a full stadium — that season, of course, was restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic — since Oct. 1, 2018, against Kansas City. Since then, six other appearances have come on the road.
This, then, is an opportunity for the Broncos to introduce themselves to a segment of the country that hasn’t yet seen the current edition play. The one that features an offensive rookie of the year candidate in Nix — he’s accounted for 20 touchdowns and just two turnovers in Denver’s past 10 games — and enters the weekend two games clear of the other AFC contenders for the No. 7 spot in the postseason.
“We’ve got to focus on the little things, execute the play, the details,” Nix said when asked about handling the spotlight. “Go back to the basics — do a good job on first and second down, convert on third down. When we get into the red zone, we’ve got to score. One thing we didn’t do great last week — Wil (Lutz) got another player of the week because he’s kicking five field goals. We’re proud of him and he’s doing a great job when he’s out there, but we want him just making (extra points).
“We’ve got to continue to be efficient when our moment comes and continue to score touchdowns.”
Nix has done plenty of that in recent weeks and that’s led to accolades.
He was the NFL’s rookie of the month for October and has been voted the league’s rookie of the week each of the past three games. That included throwing for 215 yards and two touchdowns at Kansas City, 307 yards and four touchdowns against Atlanta and 273 yards and two touchdowns at the Raiders.

Now Nix has a chance at a couple of historical markers for NFL rookies. Nix could become the fourth rookie in history to log four games of multiple touchdowns and no interceptions, joining Houston’s C.J. Stroud (2023), the Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert (2020) and Russell Wilson in Seattle (2012).
If Nix throws multiple touchdowns and no interceptions against Cleveland, he’ll join Wilson as the only NFL rookies to do so in four straight games.
“Those (accolades) are nice, but I don’t think he pays a lot of attention to it and he’s got his hands full preparing for the next game,” offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said. “… It’s another challenge in front of us and he’s been good. Whether it’s been a tough week or a good week, he’s on to the next game and getting ready to go.
“He’s been a real pro that way.”
