Guest OpEd: Trenton South Ward candidate makes case for upcoming runoff election
Nov 29, 2024
By Damian Malave, South Ward City Council Candidate
As a lifelong resident of Trenton and candidate for South Ward City Council, I want to address our most pressing challenge: public safety.
The recent findings of the Department of Justice have confirmed what many of us have known for years—the relationship between our community and our police is fractured. Our streets do not feel safe, and often, our calls for help receive delayed or inadequate responses. This issue transcends reports; it embodies the hopes and fears of countless residents I have encountered while canvassing throughout the South Ward.
Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful. I believe in the resilience of our community and our capacity to overcome these obstacles. Public safety involves more than just policing; it requires rebuilding trust, fostering collaboration, and ensuring accountability at all levels. My vision for Trenton is one in which our first responders collaborate closely with residents, creating an environment where we can have faith in those sworn to protect us. I will act as an advocate for urgent matters, ensuring that the needs of our community are addressed promptly and justly. Together, we can transform our neighborhoods into places where everyone feels secure.
Another critical issue at hand is the condition of our streets. Many city-owned properties are neglected, litter accumulates, roads require repair, and parking is inadequate. These are not insurmountable challenges; they demand strong leadership and accountability. I am committed to holding the city responsible for waste management, street maintenance, and addressing the concerns of our residents. Clean streets, repaired roads, and accessible parking are important aspects of a well-functioning community.
Our schools are also a priority for me. I pledge to represent South Ward residents at school board meetings, advocating for our students, parents, and teachers. Our children deserve safe and reliable
transportation to school; they should not have to depend on public transit alongside strangers. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our students have the resources and support necessary for their success.
What distinguishes me from my opponent is my deep connection to this community of good people. Over the past eight months, I have personally knocked on every door in the South Ward at least three times, gathering the hopes, dreams, and frustrations of our residents. These conversations inform my awareness of the South Ward’s issues. My commitment extends beyond policies—it is fundamentally about people. It involves listening, understanding, and taking action on behalf of my neighbors.
Having grown up in Trenton, I cherish its vibrancy and cultural richness. I am proud to be the son of Constantino Gonzalez Malave and Cielito Malave. I am honored to be the husband of Felita Colon-Malave, and the father of four wonderful children raised right here in the South Ward. My roots in this community run deep, and my love for Trenton underpins all that I do. Whether it’s serving as a trustee on the Board of The William Trent House, being a member of the Trenton Branch of the NAACP, or sitting on the Board of Directors at the Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County, my dedication to this community is unwavering.
My vision for the South Ward is clear: a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and proud. Let us transcend the divisions of the past and work collaboratively toward genuine solutions—fueled by hope, unity, and action. On December 3rd, I ask for your vote, not just for me, but for the future we can build together—a future where every resident of the South Ward can thrive.
