TOPEKA (KSNT) - Holiday festivities and traditions are in full swing after Thanksgiving, and what's more festive and traditional this time of year than the Nutcracker? Kids and parents got a glimpse of the annual play on Friday at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center, put on by the Kansas Ballet Academy. Spectators listened to a reading of the book "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," and watched a performance by a ballerina of "The Sugar Plum Fairy." After the performance, everyone was taught different ballet moves. Where to find some Christmas magic in small-town Kansas Kansas Ballet Academy's director of outreach Amy Reazinforce spoke to 27 News about how meaningful this time of year is for all their staff and performers. "You know, it's (ballet) what we're all passionate about," Reazinforce said. "It's very, very special to get to introduce the community to it and to have these opportunities for kids to interact in a joyful way, that's hopefully very accessible, to just get a little bit of that spark of joy to them as well."  The group will perform the Nutcracker at the Topeka Performing Arts Center on Dec. 21 and 22.
