8 injured, 3 critically, when fire rages through old Colton home
Nov 29, 2024
Eight people were hospitalized — some after jumping for their lives out of second-story windows — when their century-old home in Colton caught fire and flames quickly engulfed it Friday morning, Nov. 29.
Three of the victims — a mother and two children — were critically injured, a relative, Emmanuel Flores, told KTLA 5.
Flores said in a GoFundMe post that a 13-year-old nephew was burned over 25% of his body.
The home on East Ninth Street, across from City Hall, was destroyed in the fire, which was reported at 5:20 a.m.
Flames also burned several vehicles and caused significant damage to a home next door, Colton fire Battalion Chief Tom DeBellis said.
The destroyed home was built in the early 1900s, DeBellis said, contributing to the rapid spread of the flames. Homes of that era were built without wood stops between studs in the walls that can limit the advancement of a fire, he said.
“When a fire gets in there it just takes off like crazy,” DeBellis said. “It was blowing out of the windows and through the roof when we got there, and we’re right around the corner.”
The fire’s cause was under investigation.
Flores told KTLA that his brother was renovating the home: “He had just finished a floor, sanding the floor day and night on his knees.”
The family lost everything but their lives, Flores said in the GoFundMe post.
