KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A firefighter was hospitalized after falling through a flight of stairs while fighting a fire at an abandoned school Friday morning. According to the Kansas City Fire Department, at about 9 a.m., crews were dispatched to an abandoned, three-story school near East 22nd Street and Tracey Avenue on reports of a fire on the third floor. Upon arrival, crews began their "offensive interior operations" by searching the building and using five handlines to get the fire under control. Emergency responders and fire crews arrive at the scene of an abandoned school fire in Kansas City, Missouri on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, that left one firefighter hurt after they fell through a flight of stairs. (WDAF-TV) However, at about 9:15 a.m., as crews were taking out the fire, one firefighter fell through a set of stairs. According to KCFD, the firefighter was taken to a hospital where they were later reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported and "dangerous buildings" have been ordered. KCFD said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
