Firefighter injured after falling through stairs at abandoned school

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A firefighter was hospitalized after falling through a flight of stairs while fighting a fire at an abandoned school Friday morning.
According to the Kansas City Fire Department, at about 9 a.m., crews were dispatched to an abandoned, three-story school near East 22nd Street and Tracey Avenue on reports of a fire on the third floor.
Upon arrival, crews began their "offensive interior operations" by searching the building and using five handlines to get the fire under control.

However, at about 9:15 a.m., as crews were taking out the fire, one firefighter fell through a set of stairs.
According to KCFD, the firefighter was taken to a hospital where they were later reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
No other injuries were reported and "dangerous buildings" have been ordered.
KCFD said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
