INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department Transportation will hold a training exercise for its plow drivers on Monday. According to a press release, INDOT will treat the training exercise exactly like it would treat a real winter weather event from start to finish. The exercise will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at noon. While INDOT will treat the training as if it is a real winter weather event, no salt or brine will actually be applied to state-maintained roadways. The agency, however, indicated citizens should expect to see its fleet of more than 170 trucks local roads. “This is an opportunity for our new drivers to get on-the-road training and for more experienced drivers to share their knowledge,” said INDOT Winter Operations Manager Nick Evans. “We will treat this exercise as an actual winter weather event from start to finish. Our goal is to make sure crews and their trucks are ready to go when snow and ice arrives.”  In its release, INDOT indicated that its plow drivers aren't the only ones who should prepare for winter. The agency released a list of tips for all motorists that plan to hit the road this winter: Adjust travel to road conditions, especially on roads covered with snow. Be prepared to slow down. "Don't crowd the plow" — never tailgate or drive beside a snowplow. According to INDOT, snowplow drivers may have limited visibility, so if you must pass them, do so carefully. In the case of a crash or becoming stranded, be prepared beforehand. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle with items like food, water, a phone charger, sand/cat litter, flares/bright LED lights, a flashlight and blankets. Keep your vehicle in check. Make sure it's always full of gas, and regularly check your battery, fluids, tires and spares. Keep an eye on the weather, always checking local radars and reports. INDOT offers additional resources drivers can utilize during the winter and throughout the year, including a traffic map that provides updates on road conditions and travel delays.
