Winterlike weekend ahead
Nov 29, 2024
If you’re shopping for warmer temperatures this Black Friday, you won’t find any good deals in the Carolinas. The coldest air we’ve seen in nine months arrives by the start of the weekend – and it will have some staying power. Charlotte saw its first freeze since March this Friday morning, but the Queen City should get in on the 20s for the first time since February 20th. Stiff breezes out of the northwest will only make things worse – wind chills will likely fall into the teens across much of the Piedmont, while feels-like temperatures could end up near 0º in portions of the High Country as we wake up Saturday morning. Temperatures will do their best to recover in the afternoon, but will struggle to clear the 40s in the the Metro.
The second half of the weekend will remain cold, but highs should get back into the 50s for most outside of the mountains. Those of us looking forward to a sustained warmup will be disappointed as another cold front sweeps in from the northwest. While it won’t bring much – if any – moisture to our area, it will bring another shot of winter-like air as we kick off December’s first workweek. Lows will drop sharply back into the single digits, teens, and 20s Monday night, while highs only reach into the 30s and 40s Tuesday afternoon. Abundant sunshine and the return of southwesterly winds will allow highs to warm closer to normal by the end of the week, but the big chill is here to stay for at least the next five days.
