Chardon businesses encourage consumers to shop local this holiday season
Nov 29, 2024
Tucked in a row of businesses along Chardon Square, visitors who step inside the Nest this holiday season will find a festively decorated shop selling what owner Stephanie Talty described as “vintage chic home decor.”
The Nest opened 11 years ago, and Talty said that the 153 Main St. store sells a collection of local and new decor items. She and other local residents handmake some of the items, while her husband uses a laser machine and plasma cutter to make cutting boards, tumblers, metal signs and more.
Despite competition with larger retailers, she said that she usually sees an increase in visitation during the holiday season. Her business will be taking part in promotions on and beyond Small Business Saturday, which is Nov. 30 this year.
“On Small Business Saturday, we’ll be giving away a few Nest gift cards,” Talty said. “For every $25 they spend they’ll be entered to win a $50 Nest gift card, and we’ll have some sweet treats and some other little things going on.”
The Nest is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Talty said that it also offers Facebook Live sales on Sunday nights.
Rae Greaves also plans to participate in Small Business Saturday. She is the owner and managing cosmetologist for Polished Salon and Boutique, located at 111 South St. in Chardon. The business opened in 2019 and started a retail area in 2023.
She said that the store includes seasonal items, with its current selection including cutting boards, stockings and ornaments. Polished will offer a buy one get one 25 percent off promotion during Small Business Saturday, and she said that there will probably be another promotion in December.
Just a few doors down, at 109 Main St., Karen Miller is the co-owner of the Vintage Hollow. Visitors who walk into her store will find a series of vendor stations, which offer a mix of gift and furniture ranging from candles, soaps and jams to vintage salt and pepper shakers, nutcrackers, tables and chairs.
“It’s basically a gift shop and a furniture store, old and new. I mean, it’s pretty eclectic, which people really like because they know that they can find something and find something different every time they come in, because our vendors are all local,” Miller said.
She said that the store works to “keep the prices reasonable.”
“We want to make sure that everybody can afford something from our shop,” Miller added.
Vintage Hollow opened last October, and Miller said that it had good turnout during the 2023 holiday season. She said that the business is expecting a similar situation this year.
“We are stocking up our booths this week, and everybody has been in to fill her up so we can sell as much as we can,” Miller said.

Holiday promotions
Small Business Saturday shoppers can stick around Chardon Square for this year’s Square Christmas Lighting. According to Chardon’s website, the event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and include apple cider, cookies, music from the Chardon High School Free Harmony and visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce is also running a 2024 Shop Local Bingo event through Dec. 14. More than 30 stores, restaurants and other businesses are listed, including the Nest and Vintage Hollow.
Participants can print a board or pick one up at the Collective Rose, 101 Main St. They can have their board marked if they spend money at a business, according to the chamber, and they must turn the board into the Collective Rose by 4 p.m. on Dec. 14.
Each participant will receive one entry in the contest for filling out a row and five for completing the board. The winner will receive a Chardon gift card tree.

Talty said that the Nest is also among a group of Main Street businesses that plans to be involved in Christmas Under Twinkle Lights on Dec. 13.
“It’s a wonderful night, it’s a Friday night, and we turn off our lights and you shop under the twinkle lights under the Christmas trees, so it’s a really fun night,” she said. It’s like a little Hallmark movie night.”
Chardon’s Home for the Holidays is scheduled for Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to Chardon’s website.
While a number of small business events are planned to coincide with the holiday season, Talty believes that the support for small businesses should extend throughout the year.
“Small Business Saturday shouldn’t just be a day, it should be every day in your community,” Talty said. “It’s true that small businesses are the heart of your communities. They’re a safe haven for your community to come in and feel welcomed.”
