Rider Basketball Gameday: Broncs finally play home opener vs. Delaware
Nov 29, 2024
WHO: Delaware (3-3) at Rider (4-3)
WHEN: Saturday, 2 p.m., Alumni Gymnasium
TV/ RADIO: ESPN+/ 107.7 The Bronc Retro
LAST TIME OUT: Rider lost to Villanova, 72-48; Delaware def. Yale, 100-94
STREAK: Rider L1; Delaware W1
SERIES HISTORY: Delaware leads, 33-31. This has turned into a decent non-conference rivalry the last two seasons as both games have come down to the wire. The Blue Hens won in Lawrenceville two seasons ago thanks to a phantom foul and tip-in at the buzzer; while the Broncs returned the favor in Newark last season with an OT victory.
KENPOM RANK: Rider 246; Delaware 247
SCOUTING RIDER: The Broncs completed a 7-game season opening road trip with a 4-3 record, which, big picture, puts them in a pretty good spot as they finally come back home. All three losses are to high-major competition — UCLA, Iowa and Villanova — although it has been somewhat disappointing the way those games have all been blowouts. The home opener against Delaware will be followed by the two breakout December MAAC games (the schedule makers, again, weren’t kind to Rider as it opens at Fairfield and then hosts preseason favorite Quinnipiac). The Broncs need to get their 3-point shooting going. Outside of a 10-for-19 performance at Navy, they’ve struggled to connect from downtown and are 319th nationally at 28.3%. Jay Alvarez has actually shot it well from beyond the arc (44.4% on 36 attempts) but T.J. Weeks Jr. has gone ice cold after a nice start and dipped to 30.8% on 39 attempts. Weeks Jr. and Alvarez have taken 75 of Rider’s 127 tries from 3. The one bright spot from Wednesday night’s loss at Villanova was freshman point Flash Burton. The Cardinal O’Hara product scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting to reach double figures for the third time. He may warrant a start on Saturday since he’s looked the best of the three point guards on the roster. Turnovers have been a major issue, as well, with the Broncs having 36 more than their opponents through seven games (106-70) while giving up 16 points per game off turnovers.
SCOUTING DELAWARE: The Blue Hens have been up-and-down as they get ready for their final season in the CAA before moving to Conference USA (thanks football!) but are coming off their best performance in a 100-94 win over Yale. John Camden poured in seven 3s on his way to 30 points to lead the way for an offense that shot 47.1% from beyond the arc. Delaware has shot the 3 well overall at 37.5%, with Camden leading the way by making half of his team-high 36 attempts. Camden’s 18.7 points per game leads the way for five who average in double figures. Niels Lane (13.8 points), Cavan Reilly (13.5 points, 37.9% from 3 on 29 attempts), Izaiah Pasha (10.3 points) and Erik Timko (10.2 points) also make significant contributions. Pasha is a former Iona commit whom Rick Pitino stashed at a prep school for a year, but became available after Pitino left for St. John’s. While the Blue Hens can score (78.8 points per game), they also give up a lot of points (79 per game). The three losses are to Bucknell, Bryant and Vermont, while the wins have come against Robert Morris, Iona and Yale. Rider has beaten Bucknell and Vermont is 0-3 against the MAAC if you like the who have you played the game.
