TMobile Center 'fully capable of meeting WNBA standards'
Nov 28, 2024
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Wednesday, Kansas City Sports Commission President & CEO Kathy Nelson took questions from reporters at the T-Mobile Center as the Arkansas Razorbacks men's basketball team practiced for their game against the Illinois Fighting Illini, scheduled for Thursday.
FOX4 asked Nelson how she could try to get a Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team to come to this city.
"Well, how… that's a complicated question," she said in the first part of her answer.
Nelson followed that up by saying working with potential ownership groups, like KC Current owners Angie and Chris Long, as well as Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, is one of the first steps.

"This is the perfect venue," Nelson said, talking about the arena. "This was built to house a professional team and working to make sure that that team makes sense for our city, and our city makes sense for the league."
She continued by saying she's been working for years behind the scenes on a basketball team. The ownership of the Current recently met with the WNBA to discuss expanding to the city.
"I think what you just saw with the [National Women's Soccer League] NWSL Championship game and how the city showed up for that. It felt like a Super Bowl type atmosphere the entire week leading into that championship game," Nelson said. "We know we can recreate that here over and over again."
Thursday morning, FOX4's Pat McGonigle and Kerri Stowell talked with Mayor Quinton Lucas about the possibility of bringing a WNBA team to the city.
"I would expect that we do have some good luck with it," Mayor Lucas said. "The cool people call it, 'The W…' but you know, with the WNBA, Caitlin Clark will be here for an event in February, and so I look forward to us having another professional team, and the folks at the T-Mobile Center are ready to get that anchor tenant and have something going on in the summer months. It could be great for our region."

At the T-Mobile Center, FOX4 also caught up with arena General Manager Jay Cooper.
"We're fortunate that T-Mobile Center is designed to host a number of events," he said that day. "We're fully capable of meeting WNBA standards if a team were to come to Kansas City, but we're also fortunate to have a lot of diverse programming throughout the year."
The WNBA season takes place from May to October every year. In 2024, each team played 40 games.
