‘We are heartbroken’: Endicott College police officer killed after headon crash on I95

NEWBURY, Mass. (WLNE) — A Endicott College police sergeant from Exeter, New Hampshire was killed yesterday in wrong way crash in Newbury.
According to officials, Newbury Fire was dispatched at 12:05 a.m. Thursday to I-95 northbound near exit 81 for a report of a two-vehicle crash.
Upon arrival, rescuers found two passenger cars had crashed head-on on the highway.
The operators of both vehicles were trapped inside the two cars, and firefighters began a “lengthy and delicate extrication process” to free both parties from the wreckage.
After a nearly hour-long process, according to officials, the two adult male drivers were extricated.
One driver was taken by medical helicopter to a trauma center.
During the response and rescue efforts, officials said it was “apparent that one motorist was traveling southbound, the wrong way, in the northbound lane when the crash occurred.”
The highway was closed in both directions, with portions of I-95 northbound remain closed early Thursday morning.
According to Endicott College Chief of Police Kerry Ramsdell, Sgt. Jeremy Cole, was killed when he was struck head-on while driving home early on Thanksgiving morning after leaving his evening shift.
“On behalf of the Public Safety & Police Department at Endicott College, I wish to express our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the family of Sgt. Cole,” he said.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our department. We are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. Sgt. Cole was not only a dedicated public servant and prior recipient of a lifesaving award, but also a cherished member of our team,” he continued.
The statement continued:
“On this Thanksgiving Day, our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of a police officer who reported for duty keeping the rest of us safe and secure but did not return home. We are committed to supporting them in any way we can through this unimaginable grief.
“On behalf of the family of Sgt. Cole, we kindly ask that everyone respects their privacy as they navigate this painful time. We share in their sorrow, and we are here for them. Endicott College is currently closed and we respectfully ask that the media do not visit the campus.
”All further inquiries related to this incident should be directed to Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.”
Endicott College also released a statement on his passing:
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Sergeant Jeremy Cole, a dedicated member of our Campus Public Safety and Police Department for 15 years. Jeremy’s kindness, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our community will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
According to ABC6’s affiliate WCVB, the other driver who was taken to the hospital is expected to face charges.
