US Postal Service prepared for 2024 peak holiday rush

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — 'Tis the busiest season for mailing gifts — but perhaps not the easiest season for them arriving on time. However, the United States Postal Service assures they're prepared to handle this year's peak holiday delivery demand.
In recent months, WAVY has reported complaints from residents in the Hampton Roads over mailing delays from USPS. Back in October of this year, a Norfolk woman told 10 On Your Side's Markeisha Jackson she's without mail for weeks at a time.
"You don't mind if it's a week late, or even two weeks late, but to go months without getting your mail, and then your bills you're trying to catch up and send off your bills, it's outrageous," said Pamela Wilson.
It's no different for a couple living in Portsmouth who shared their concerns with Chris Horne last month as well, saying their deliveries go completely missing.
"Oh, God, it's been going on for years and years and years," said Roger Evans.
Evans depends on social security checks so the disappearance of his mail is also costing him financially.
"Five hundred bucks, that money comes in handy," Evans said. "I already had plans for the money to pay off stuff. Oh well, they had to take less this month and I still ain't got that check."
But the post office assures they've heard customers loud and clear as they know wait times and mix ups often increase throughout the holiday season.
U.S. Postal Service Communications Specialist Philip Bogenberger said they're equipped to handle the influx of holiday deliveries this year thanks to the new package sorting machines spread throughout the country.
"We're more prepared now than ever," said Bogenberger, U.S. Postal Service Communications Specialist
So far,158 have been installed, now making a total of 506. Bogenberger said this is happening under the "Delivering for America" plan to move packages more efficiently.
USPS has on boarded 7,500 seasonal workers and will have more than 27,000 new vehicles on the roads. The increased daily processing capacity has now expanded to roughly 60 million.
Customers can expect to receive there deliveries within an average of three days.
