NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Red tape can be seen closing off the two large multi-unit apartment buildings that burned down on Wednesday. Three people were injured and 15 others were displaced.
"I feel very sorry for the families that are going through this at the moment, because it is very sad. There was nothing to alarm us to where, you know, the fire had kept spreading,” said nearby neighbor Monisha Baptiste.
"Despair, sorrow, because people hurting people that it happened to, you know, people like everyone else my heart goes out to them,” said nearby resident Joseph Burden.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the flames started on the first floor of a four-plex. Some, like the folks at Bayou Beer Garden, hope to step in to collect donations for a friend who lost everything.
"He is a former employee of ours and a close regular. We set up a charitable donation through our post system here. So right after you come, you know, enjoy yourself where you can leave a little donation," said Bayou Beer Garden manager Brian Williams.
However, the business is not stopping there, also chipping in themselves.

"Anything that they donate we are going to match for the next couple of weeks. We are just trying to match it to help him get back on his feet," said Williams.

Burnt pieces of what used to be several apartment homes in the mid-city community lay unrecognizable. Burden believes it can all turn around with the help of others pitching in.
"Because people have love in their heart and compassion for their fellow man," said Burden.
The owner of the apartments says he is in the process of getting the property cleaned up, and is looking to help his tenants find somewhere new to live.
