GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD)--A restaurant in Georgetown County held a community Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday to feed people in need while bringing neighbors together to celebrate the holiday.
For the past 16 years, Andrea Johnson, the owner of Aunny's, has opened her doors to the community, serving delicious hot meals on Thanksgiving — which she said started from a calling.
“God just said to give back to the community by making a few Thanksgiving Day dinners, and when we first started, we started with 100- 150, and we are now up to over 1100,” said Johnson.
Meals were served at 11 a.m., but people started lining up outside her Front Street restaurant at 9 a.m. The kitchen staff served ham, turkey, mac & cheese, collard greens, yams, corn, and more. One resident who enjoyed a meal said she’s been attending for the last several years and appreciates Aunny going the extra mile to help her and others during the holiday.
“Every year around this time, I feel great because many people can’t do this at home or cook themselves, and Aunny's is right here, so I enjoy it. It’s a good thing, and I always try to come down,” said Dot Walker, a community resident.
Andrea said the smiles and appreciation are what she is thankful for the most. She plans to continue hosting Thanksgiving meals and is already ready for 2025.
“There are a lot of stories of people who have come in and seen this, and they are thankful. It makes me want to do so much more because they appreciate it, so for as long as I can, as long as God gives me strength and breath in my body, I guess I’ll be back.”
Georgetown will keep the holiday spirit going all season long. Their next event is the Christmas tree lighting, set for December 6, and a parade on December 7.
