How to avoid an 'unhealthy eating pattern' during Thanksgiving

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Thanksgiving is centered around enjoying food — but Holly Gilligan, a registered dietitian with URMC, says what you do before the actual Thanksgiving meal is especially important. Specifically, having breakfast.
"We've all been there if we're super hungry, all of a sudden we want to be eating everything in sight," she said, "doesn't really matter how it tastes or what it is, we're just trying to eat really quickly and get in as much as we can."
Gilligan says many people tend to skip breakfast in an effort to "save calories" for that big Thanksgiving meal, but that's not the best idea. Having a solid breakfast — which Gilligan says — should include fiber and protein, is an important step to help you make better decisions. The idea is, you won't be as hungry come dinner time.
When dinner time does come around, Gilligan says, grab your plate and start slow. Go with veggies and proteins first and then go for the foods with higher calories. She says this is important for staying on track with your dietary goals to avoid going into an unhealthy eating pattern.
She adds, look forward to leftovers. You may be able to forego that second plate if you remember you can have some more tomorrow.
