SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- At 17 months old, little Frankie is about to scare and amaze every parent watching the viral video showing the toddler running around their family pool.
“I immediately thought, 'Oh my gosh he did exactly what he was taught to do,'” said Nina Ruggeri, Frankie’s mother.
As he slips and falls head over heels into the pool, the little guy rights himself and starts floating as his father watches in amazement and then saves the little guy moments after.
“I immediately thought oh my gosh, he did exactly what he was taught to do... and those lessons were invaluable,” said Nina Ruggeri Frankie’s mother.
In the video, Frankie’s dad can be seen pausing just for a second and watching his son swimming to the surface. Because after months of Infant Self Rescue water safety training, Little Frankie was facing his first real world life-or-death pool accident scenario and Frankie’s mom couldn’t be more proud.

“He knows where the water is. He’s holding his breath because as he’s falling in, he takes a breath and holds it in, because he learned that in day one of lessons with me. And then he comes up to the surface finds the air, he finds the surface with his head and floats to the surface and then he stays there,” said Brad Hurvitz, Frankie’s swimming coach, ISR instructor and founder of My Baby Swims.
Hurvitz is Frankie’s teacher and has taught thousands of infants and toddlers ISR, this is his take on the now viral video.
“Every kid can learn to save themselves with ISR,” Hurvitz said.
Hurvitz says since the video, his ISR appointments have been booked solid. He says it’s been a little overwhelming, but also heartening to see people realizing how impactful the training can be.
"He loves swimming, he always wants to go to pool and he’s so good at swimming now,” Ruggeri said.
Now a few months later, little Frankie is still as busy as ever, and the water is still a place to celebrate without fear.
“He did everything beautifully, I never want to find out, but he could have stayed there longer than the five seconds the video showed,” Hurvitz said.
