Tonight, a storm system brings rain to the DMV through Thanksgiving afternoon. This system is expected to get from a quarter of an inch to nearly one inch of chilly rain, which is needed due to the drought throughout the DMV. All rain ends in the morning for our Virginia and West Virginia counties and ends in the afternoon for southern Maryland. After the cold front passes off our coast, temperatures drop throughout the day, with high temperatures in the 40s-50s felt in the morning. The rain transitions to snow for the mountains, with about 1-2 inches of snow accumulation along and west of the Alleghenies. Behind the cold front, winds pick up in earnest, gusting to 25-30 mph during the afternoon, and when the winds relax at night, the thermometer will dramatically drop below freezing for many people. It will be breezy and dry on Friday, except in the mountains, where there could be more snow showers. High temperatures will likely stay in the 40s and struggle to break 50 in the afternoon. Still, they will drop sharply Friday night with a reinforcing cold front, bringing the thermometer into the 20s for most of the area and into the teens in the mountains. This weekend and beyond into the middle of next week, the DMV will stay below normal, with the mountains seeing multiple upslope mountain snow showers. The first wave of mountain snows is forecast to be Sunday into Monday, with more snow showers Tuesday into Wednesday. All accumulations look light, given how fast the disturbances pivot through the region. The bigger weather story over the next week will be the cold temperatures that will stick around for an extended period. Afternoon temperatures appear in the mid to upper 30s Saturday through Tuesday east of the Alleghenies, with higher elevations remaining below freezing through Wednesday. Then, at night, lows will fall into the mid to upper teens over the mountains with low to mid-20s further east.
