FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Poverello House in Fresno served hot Thanksgiving meals to those in need Wednesday. Organizers say they do not only want to fill their bellies; they hope to fill their hearts with hope. “For people who are experiencing homelessness and going through hard times, this can be a very challenging time of year. But we want them to come here and have a smile on their face, hear some live music, eat some delicious food and feel loved,” Poverello House CEO Zack Darrah said. He says the most important thing is making people feel dignified. “We believe that what can happen to folks on the streets is that they forget about their dignity. But when somebody remembers their dignity, when it's affirmed in them, we believe that's the first step in getting out of homelessness for good for every person,” Darrah said. They served around 500 people during their afternoon buffet, and Darrah says it took a lot of volunteers to make it happen. “When you're out there, you're almost invisible. But when you come in here, you're a person. So we want to feed you and give you the same respect that anyone would,” volunteer Alexis Richards said. Richards was one of around 100 volunteers Wednesday. She says they sign up every year to serve people like Demetrius Moore, who say the organization makes them feel at home. “They don’t treat you like you're an outsider. They treat you like a real person. I’m just thankful to be here.” Volunteers served every meal with love, showing guests how much they matter. The Poverello House will also serve meals on Thanksgiving Day at Papa Mike’s Cafe. Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. and dinner is at 2:30 p.m.
