FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Officers are advising the public to not drink and drive after a man was killed and another in the Fresno County Jail following a violent single-car crash into an orchard at the corner of Vino Avenue and Jim Savage Road north of Reedley around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
"We had a vehicle traveling northbound on Vino Avenue at what appears to be a fast rate of speed. The driver for whatever reason, lost control, struck a drainage pipe that was on the right shoulder which caused that vehicle to spin out of control and into the orchard," said CHP Public Information Officer Mike Salas.
Salas says the driver and passenger, both 18-year-olds, were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were ejected, as their car hit roughly a dozen trees and flipped multiple times.
"The driver was pronounced deceased there at the scene. The passenger miraculously escaped that crash with minor injuries," Salas said.
The driver had been identified as 18-year-old Isael Acevedo of Reedley. His passenger and friend is 18-year-old Jorge Medina.
Salas says after the crash Medina, was helped by local farm workers before first responders arrived. When they did, he was helped into an ambulance for treatment.
The situation then took an unexpected turn.
"While inside, the victim became combative with our officers during the interviews. Both our officers were bitten by that passenger and he was subsequently arrested there at the scene for assault on an officer."
It's believed Medina was in the middle of a mental health crisis at the time Salas says he bit the officers.
He was taken to the hospital before he was eventually booked into the Fresno County Jail for assaulting an officer.
As for the cause of the crash, Salas says it's believed Acevedo was impaired.
"We do believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. And again, as we approach the holiday season, again our message is to not get behind the wheel while impaired. No matter where you're going even after one drink."
