Redlands youth church leader sentenced to 175 years to life for sexually abusing boys

A youth church leader who was allowed to spend the night with three boys in his trailer on a Redlands ranch over five years will be imprisoned for at least the next 26 years after he was sentenced for sexual abuse crimes.
Abraham Jatnel Coronado, 45, will be eligible for parole after those 26 years but then will begin serving a sentence of 175 years to life, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday, Nov. 26.
A jury convicted Coronado of 13 felony sexual abuse charges against the church members, ages 12 to 17, that included oral copulation and lewd acts.
“After nearly two decades, the defendant’s horrific and predatory conduct towards children has finally come to an end,” Deputy District Attorney Adrienne Mendoza said in a news release. “Not only should the victims be applauded for facing their perpetrators, but also for their unwavering bravery, honesty, and courage throughout the entire criminal procedure process.”
Coronado worked at the La Luz Del Mundo (The Light of the World) church at 302 S. 4th Street. The abuse happened while Coronado oversaw Ebenezer Ranch, an off-site church location in Redlands. Children from the church would sometimes attend at the ranch.
“The children were left alone without parental supervision but were presumed to be under the care and direction of Coronado, who was well respected and known to have a close relationship with the church’s main leaders,” a DA’s news release said.
There was no one at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 27, who could comment, an employee there said. A message was left requesting to speak to a church leader.
The red brick church, adorned by statues of miniature lions, hosts services three times daily and twice on Sundays, according to a sign there.
The first victim reported the abuse in 2021 after seeing Coronado with another victim at the church, the DA’s release said. The first victim testified that he was abused between the ages of 15 and 17. A recording was played during the trial during which Coronado did not dispute that the abuse took place, the DA’s release said.
A second victim testified that he was abused from 2010 to 2011 when he was 13. A third victim testified he was abused when he was 12 and 13.
Coronado wrote a letter of apology for all the “suffering and humiliation” caused by his “stupidity,” the release said.
No record of any lawsuits filed against Coronado or the church in San Bernardino County could be located Wednesday.
Naason Joaquin Garcia, the former head of Mexico-based La Luz Del Mundo, pleaded guilty in 2022 to two counts of forcible oral copulation involving minors and one count of a lewd act upon a child who was 15. Court documents alleged García coerced victims into performing sexual acts by telling them that if they went against any of their desires or wishes as “the Apostle,” that they were going against God, The Associated Press reported in 2023.
Attorney Jeff Anderson, who represented one of Garcia’s victims in a lawsuit, said in an interview Wednesday that Coronado was close with Garcia.
