PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police said they have been able to identify the person who died after being found shot in a burned Churchland dumpster last week.
PPD: Homicide investigation after body found in burning dumpster on Pepperwood Court
Kurtis Lee Watson, 45, was found dead Nov. 18 in a burning dumpster adjacent to the Bethel Worship Center Church on Pepperwood Court. His family has been notified, police said.
A detective's affidavit indicated that Watson had been shot in the head, back, thigh and foot, and police, who have classified his death as a homicide, intend to file second-degree murder charges.
Police had responded to a call just after 9 p.m. Nov. 18 about the discovery of a body during the extinguishing of a dumpster fire, and when officers arrived and the ashes had settled, there was a deadly discovery, confirming the presence of human remains, police said.
Portsmouth Police have been looking at surveillance video for two people of interest. They said they found a spent cartridge casing near the dumpster, along with a blood stain.
PPD said this is an active investigation with its Major Crime Unit. Anyone with information about Watson's whereabouts before Monday, or any other information about the incident, can get in touch with the Portsmouth Police Investigations Bureau at 757-393-8536 or call 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
