INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Independence Police Department released body camera footage and context of what they say led up to a deadly police shooting earlier this month.
Wednesday night, after seeing that video for the first time, FOX4 gathered reactions from the family.
It happened earlier this month as Independence Police responded to a domestic assault at Oval Spring Apartments. For the first time, Independence Police confirmed it was an officer who shot and killed Maria Pike, 34, and Destinii Hope, 11 weeks. The edited video released Wednesday shows some of what took place inside that apartment.
Several family members told FOX4 they were not aware the video was being released, nor did they see it before the rest of the public. After watching it, Pike's twin sister still has questions.
Video shows Independence police meeting baby Destinii's grandmother outside her son's apartment after she told police she was assaulted as she came to see her two-month-old granddaughter.

It then shows Pike in the closet holding the infant.
"Are you okay, are you hurt?" one officer asked Pike as she shook her head.
At no portion of the video released does she speak only shaking her head or nodding. Her twin sister says Pike told her about postpartum struggles she was facing in their last conversation two days before her death.
"I thought she went to her baby to seek comfort and bring those emotions down and she didn't have enough time until the cops showed up you can see her not talking, it's like she's afraid to speak," Pike's sister Nina Book said.
According to a limited police narrative in the video they spent 11 minutes trying to convince her to release the baby.
"You going to get rid of the baby?" one officer asked as she exited the closet and walked past them to the bed.
"Eleven minutes, that's enough time to call up a mental health crisis counselor to calm down the situation ask her if you prefer to speak to a counselor instead of a cop," Book said.
After sitting down on the bed Pike pulled a concealed knife from a nightstand and as the video cuts off according to police Pike lunged at officers with baby Destinii still in her arms. One officer fired at Pike and both she and baby Destinii sustained fatal injuries according to Independence Police.
Though the video proves she had a knife, Pike's twin sister says it doesn't explain the outcome.
"He should have enough training to try other options to get the knife out of her hand and preserve their lives somehow. You kill a baby while you're at it? What?" Book questioned.
Pike said she'd like to see the full unedited video, which is now in the hands of that special Police Involved Investigative Team made up of detectives from neighboring agencies. They'll soon present their findings to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office for review.
Independence Police weren't available for any questions Wednesday but did close that video with a graphic that reads:
"Any time there is a loss of life it is a tragic outcome. This tragedy weighs heavy on the hearts and minds of the men and women of the Independence Police Department. We remain committed to serving the citizens of Independence and ask our community for continued patience while this investigation continues."
KC Law Enforcement Accountability Project released the following statement Wednesday night:
"It is unconscionable that, after the trauma the families of Baby Destinii and Mom Maria have endured, the Independence Police Department would release a highly edited bodycam footage of this tragedy on Thanksgiving Eve. The thought that IPD could not give the grieving families enough respect or consideration to allow them to have a peaceful holiday, instead releasing the video to the media WITHOUT WARNING, is inexcusable. We are again reminded of the complete lack of respect for victims of police violence, for those suffering from mental health issues, and for the cruel and inhumane treatment shown to certain members of our community. It does not go unnoticed that they released the video less than twenty-four hours after the family's rally for Justice for Maria and baby Destiny went public. We hope the community will not be deterred by the gaslighting by law enforcement and will join the families in their demand for the release of the entire bodycam video, a transparent and thorough investigation, a review and transformation of department policies, and accountability for all responsible for the deaths of Maria and baby Destinii."
