BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It's a Bakersfield tradition unlike any other. The day before Thanksgiving, also known as the Basque Crawl. "There's nothing like this anywhere," said Rod Crawford, owner of Pyrenees Cafe. "Not nowhere in California, nowhere in America." It started decades ago, with college students coming back to Bakersfield for the holidays and missing the traditional Basque spots. Now cemented as a yearly tradition, the Basque Crawl kicks off with lunch at Luigi's. With all tables booked and a line outside the door before at 10 a.m. "For reservations this morning we have 247 I think," said Gino Valpredo, President of Luigi's Restaurant. "So, we only have one two-top left for a walk in." Next, off to Pyrenees, where preparations started three weeks ago. And staff expects close to a thousand people throughout the evening. "We've got three bars on the patio, we've got a back bar, and our front bar, we'll probably have 14 bartenders working tonight. We've got 11 security guards," said Rod Crawford. And the Basque Crawl can't miss this staple. Wool Growers is considered one of the first original Basque restaurants in Old Town Kern. One popular drink this day is the Pecan Punch "We have over 500 reservations for this evening.," said Christiane Camou, 3rd generation owner of Wool Growers. "Ohh, it just warms my heart really. I just love it because nobody's in a rush, everybody is just here to have a good time and visit, and reminisce about what's happened over the last year." A tradition decades in the making and for decades to go. "To be a part of this tradition, it means everything to us," said Rod Crawford.
