BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- If Thanksgiving is all about food and fellowship, the day before Thanksgiving is all about preparation, but Thanksgiving Eve is also sort of a holiday unto itself.
There's as much tradition in getting everything ready for Thanksgiving as there is in the holiday itself. For many of us, that means the annual day-before trek for holiday pies from a bakery, or Marie Callender's, or Costco for one of those gigantic pumpkin pies.
How else might we prepare if we're not baking pies or roasting turkeys ourselves? Reservations at a favorite restaurant. That counts as preparation. Yes, many local restaurants are open, including KC Steakhouse.

Co-owner Cassie Bittle looks at it almost as a community service.
“People always sort of raise an eyebrow when we say we're open on the major holidays, like Christmas and Thanksgiving,” Bittle said. “but the reality is, not everybody has a big family, not everybody has a full table, so it gives people the opportunity to still come, get a good smile, have a meal and go home feeling grateful for what they have, not necessarily what they don't have.”
How about a little prime rib for Thanksgiving? Hungry Hunter is completely booked -- but they'll try to make room for you anyway.
Natalie Tudor, a Hungry Hunter server, says Thanksgiving dinner out seems to be gaining in popularity.
“People of all ages, actually. Families, friends (come in),” she said. “More and more people are coming out every single year. … Tomorrow is gonna be completely packed here. We open at 11 o'clock and close at 9, and we have reservations from open all the way to close.”
And, yes, they have traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner as well.

“People are getting tired of maybe being at home after a little while,” he said. “... People want to get out from having to deal with some family or that sort of thing and they want to see their friends.
Think of it as dinner and show, turkey day style.
