(KRON) -- Actress Sharon Stone spoke out on the results of the recent U.S. presidential election, saying that the United States was still in its "adolescence" and implying that many U.S. voters were "uneducated" and naive. Stone, who lived in San Francisco for several years in the 1990s, was speaking at a film festival, where she was being honored with a lifetime achievement award. Speaking on a panel on Sunday with remarks that were posted to YouTube, Stone was asked a question about violence toward women which the "Basic Instinct" actress used as a jumping off point to discuss the election. "We have to stop and think about who we chose for government," Stone said, "and if in fact we are actually choosing government, or if the government is choosing itself." ‘Political stunt’: Tesla exclusion from state EV tax credit proposal pits San Jose mayor against Newsom Stone was speaking at the Torino Film Festival in Italy, where she was being honored with the Stella della Mole award, which has previously been awarded to director Martin Scorsese and controversial actor Kevin Spacey, among others. In her remarks, she appeared to draw parallels between the current U.S. political situation and Italy's fascist past. "Italy has seen fascism," she said. "Italy has seen these things. You guys, you understand what happens. You have seen this before." "My country is in its adolescence," Stone continued. "Adolescence is very arrogant. Adolescence thinks it knows everything. Adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant, and we are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence." Stone, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Scorsese's 1996 crime drama, "Casino," said the country's current political climate was something new and implied it was a result of American voters being naive. "We haven't seen this before in our country," she said. "So, Americans who don't travel, who 80 percent don't have a passport, who are uneducated, are in their extraordinary naivete." "What I can say is, the only way we can help with these issues is to help each other," Stone went on to say. A once prolific actress who received a Golden Globe for "Casino" and an Emmy for "The Practice," has taken to painting in recent years. In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year, she said she was "shocked" that her acclaimed performance in "Casino" didn't lead to more top leading lady roles in Hollywood.
