Wichita's new winter shelter opens Friday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Wichita's new winter shelter is set to open this week.
Wichita City leaders originally planned to open on Thanksgiving, but that was pushed back to Dec. 2. HumanKind Ministries, the nonprofit set to operate the shelter, says the weather prompted them to open it on Friday.
"We've been watching the weather very closely. And this weekend, it's supposed to be extremely cold overnight. And so we wanted to work as fast as we could to get it open as soon as we could for those individuals to have a warm space to come into," said Dawn Shepler, the president and CEO of HumanKind.
She said the shelter is the culmination of many months of planning.

"I believe that the city obtained the building in August. By the first of November, the contract was signed and completed. Last Friday, HumanKind received the keys to the facility, and we started moving in very quickly," said Shepler.
Doors at the former Park Elementary School, 1025 N. Main, will open at 7 p.m. on Friday. The low-barrier shelter will accept men and women. Children are not allowed.
In the meantime, those looking for resources are encouraged to call the United Way hotline at 211. They can connect you to what you need, depending on what is available.
