Organization in western Massachusetts helping victims of domestic violence

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) - Domestic violence situations tend to increase around holidays but there are resources in our area for those who may be experiencing interpersonal violence.
Chicopee Police and Fire responded to West St Tuesday morning where they found a 21-year-old woman killed and a 28-year-old man with a laceration on his neck. That man is in police custody.
"From what I have been briefed this afternoon to understand, it was an act of domestic violence," Chicopee Mayor John Vieau said in a statement sent out Tuesday night.
Mayor Vieau described the scene as horrific and not a random act of violence.
In the United States, every 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is killed by a current or former partner.
"We are providing the next steps to a new life," said Elizabeth Dineen, the CEO of the YWCA of Western Massachusetts.
She said there can be a stigma around getting help in a domestic violence situation.
"People are embarrassed sometimes to seek services because they feel as though they have failed or somehow there is going to be a stigma attached to them because they couldn't work the problem out with their partner," said Dineen.
The YWCA provides free services including individual and group therapy and programs for children who experience or witness acts of domestic violence but can also help men or women who need to get out of a living situation.
The YWCA of Western Massachusetts also has a shelter where they can provide housing for someone who may be in imminent danger. Through donations, they can also provide clothes for those who may need some.
