SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Wednesday morning concluded Rock 102's 31st annual Mayflower Marathon, raising a record-breaking total of $236,049.81 for Open Pantry Community Services. It was a culmination of Bax and Nagel's 52 hour-long broadcasting marathon where they called on the Western Massachusetts community to donate food items for those in need. Tips to make sure you get to your Thanksgiving destinations safely About 1 in 3 families suffer from food insecurity in Hampden County, and with nearly 4 trucks full of food donations, the Mayflower Marathon is making sure families are not going without a meal this holiday season. This time of the year is especially crucial for donations. Nicole Lussier from Open Pantry said on Thanksgiving alone, the Pantry will serve nearly 800 people, and these donations will help them meet a high demand through the winter. "We've had people come with one bag, a couple bags, a couple cans, and then people come with just a whole carload of things," Lussier said. "it's just so wonderful to see how much we care about each other." To Bax and Nagel, the Marathon is a first-hand example of the Western Massachusetts community really coming together to make a difference. "And the open pantry really does give people who are experiencing a difficult time a whole lot of hope," Mike "Bax" Baxendale said. "It's the generosity of the community that makes that happen." While this year's total has already surpassed last year's, there is still time to send in a monetary donation online through the weekend.
