ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A drunk driver who plowed into an Albuquerque home and killed a 74-year-old man watching television was sentenced on Wednesday.
Mark Castello was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing Bryan Peterson.
During the court hearing, Peterson's family spoke about the pain and heartache Castello had caused them. "We will carry this pain for the rest of our lives. Our family will never be the same. There is no true healing from an event like this," exclaimed Peterson's daughter, Tiffany Saiz.
Nearly one year ago, on Dec. 28, Peterson was sitting in his living room watching TV when Castello, driving drunk, lost control of his vehicle and drove into Peterson's home near Eubank and Indian School.
"I cannot even begin to understand why a person would be driving a vehicle in such a way that can go through a garage door. Into a car, pushing that car through three walls of a home," said Jean Peterson, the victim's wife.

"My dad was trapped in his recliner. The wheel of my parent's car was in the center of his chest; he remained trapped for over 30 minutes as we stood outside completely helpless," recounted Saiz.
Peterson left behind his wife of 52 years, four children, and nine grandchildren.
When Castello took the stand, he said, "I am aware of the tragic situation that I have put the Peterson family in and what they are about to go through. It was not my intention at all."
Castello pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle. Judge Bruce Fox sentenced Castello to 10 years in prison and five years of supervised probation as part of the plea agreement.
Peterson's family said DWI sentences in New Mexico need to be stiffer so people pay a real price for this crime. "Please change the laws," said Jean Peterson. "Change the penalties so that, as I said, this could have been prevented, I think, if maybe action had taken sooner, before it got to the point where my husband was killed."
Before this fatal DWI crash, Castello had been arrested four times on DWI charges with two convictions.
