CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- River City Sportsplex announced on Wednesday that four additional lighted fields have been added to the complex, bringing the total field count to sixteen. According to the county, the complex now has 16 high-quality turf fields at its disposal. They cite several reasons for the expansion, including higher resident demand for athletic field access, growth of tournaments and events and increasing impact economically for the Chesterfield hospitality community. In 2025, the complex will see additional improvements like parking, a play area with a splash pad and universal playground, a picnic area, a 5k trail system, restrooms, shade structures and more. The funding for the new field construction was part of a $540 million bond referendum package that was approved in November 2022. River City Sportsplex was acquired by the county in 2016 for $5.5 million, at the time it was an unfinished but fully functional 12-field facility. 8News spoke with J.C. Poma -- Chesterfield's Director of Sports, Visitation and Entertainment Information -- about what an expansion like this does for the community as well as the county itself. "Sports tourism is a gateway to Chesterfield County," Poma said. "It's a grassroots effort that showcases our community as one of the elite athletic communities across the United States, but sports tourism has a real impact on our economy."
