RICHMOND, R.I. (WPRI) — One person is dead and another was seriously injured in a rollover crash that happened on I-95 in Richmond Wednesday afternoon, according to Rhode Island State Police.
Troopers were called to I-95 North near Exit 7 just after 2 p.m. following reports of a two-car crash.
An investigation into the crash revealed that a vehicle in the right lane was rear-ended, causing both to veer off the highway and rolled over into the woods.
Speed appears to be a factor in the crash, according to police.
The driver and passenger who were in the first vehicle suffered minor injuries and were treated by first responders.
Police said the driver of the second car was brought to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. The passenger in the second car was rushed to Kent Hospital and later pronounced dead.
Troopers temporarily shut down I-95 North and diverted traffic onto Route 138, causing backups on both sides of the highway.
Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Rhode Island State Police's Hope Valley Barracks at (401) 444-1068.
