WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Woonsocket firefighters responded to a building alarm Tuesday morning and were met with an armed suspect, according to police. Police said Luis Martinez Villegas, 52, was holding a baseball bat with three knives taped to it when a firefighter encountered him at his Village Road apartment around 9 a.m. (Courtesy: Woonsocket Police Department) The firefighter ran out of the building and was followed by Villegas, who police said was holding the weapon "in a threatening manner." An officer who responded after the firefighter called for help pulled out his gun and ordered Villegas to drop the bat. He complied and was taken into custody. The fire department said the alarm went off because paper was being intentionally burned on a stove inside Villegas' apartment. Villegas was arraigned Tuesday on charges of felony assault and first-degree arson. He was ordered held without bail and is due back in court next month. Close Thanks for signing up!
