SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Two people are behind bars facing a list of charges after a 5 year-old boy showed up to day care with serious bruises.
37-year-old Joshua Manzanares and 26-year-old Samantha Maier were booked into the Minnehaha County Jail Tuesday morning. They each face two counts of abuse or cruelty to a minor. Manzanares is additionally charged with aggravated assault, and Maier also faces counts of misprision of a felony and permitting physical abuse.
Police were called to a Sioux Falls day care last month after staff noticed bruising on the 5-year-old. Authorities found what appeared to be dried blood on the victim's ear, signs of strangulation and discoloration on his back in linear patterns.

According to court documents, the victim told police that Manzanares had recently spanked him.
"There was some around the neck and kind of jawline. There was some bruising on his back, pretty extensive bruising on his back, and then also to his buttocks area," Sam Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department said.
An affidavit says, Maier told officers the boy had fallen down the stairs. She denied any abuse happening at home. She also claimed the boy is lying, saying he has been acting out to get attention.
Court documents say that during a Child's Voice interview, less than a week later, the boy told officials that an eye injury was from when Manzanares hit him in the face, and during another incident, Manzanares "put him on the floor" and held his nose so he couldn't breathe. The victim says Maier was present, but she did not intervene.
Sioux Falls Police say in cases like this, the department works closely with Child's Voice and Child Protection Services.
"We have a close relationship with those organizations and the goal is to protect children," Clemens said. "It doesn't matter where this information comes in and how it gets to the police department. All three of those organizations are going to be involved and they all have their different aspects of what they're working towards."
In court Wednesday afternoon, a judge set Maier's bond at $1,000 cash only and Manzanares' at $7,500 cash only.
Manzanares is also listed on the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry after he was convicted of rape in 2009.
