MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In today's Condumer Alert, here's some advice about how to spot and avoid becoming a victim of check fraud. This can happen to anyone, but businesses are a big target. Just last month, we saw cases of check fraud twice in two weeks. Woman accused of stealing, forging check from mail A Memphis woman was charged with forgery and theft after police say she intercepted a $2,500 check mailed by a North Carolina company to a local business and deposited it into her bank account. In another case, a woman was accused of depositing $25,000 worth of forged checks that were from businesses to their vendors. MPD: Woman deposits $25k worth of forged checks into bank account Lt. Kevin Johnson of MPD's Economic Crimes Unit says crooks are targeting your mail. "The biggest trend we see is checks are stolen while they're in transit, and then from there it's very easy for them to find somebody with a new account or an inactive account that they can drop the check in and try to make some withdrawals," Johnson said. MPD works closely with the U.S. Postal Inspectors Service. Inspector Susan Link says one way businesses can protect themselves is to stop using envelopes with clear windows. "I wouldn't use those," Link said. "It's another way for the thieves to see and decide if they want that piece of mail. Security checks are a good thing to get. They have features that make it harder to forge a copy, replicate. And that' something that's really important because that's what they're doing. They are washing the checks, they're copying the checks." Postal Police frustrated by crimes affecting carriers A few more tips, for recurring transactions, set up online payments so you don't have to send the check through the mail: Check with your bank for "Positive Pay" electronic lists of exactly who the check is going to along with the amount. Don't put outgoing mail in the blue box after the last pick up. Postal inspectors recommend taking it inside and don't leave mail in your mailbox for too long. And it may seem simple, but monitor your bank account.
