It was getaway day for the long holiday weekend for many folks across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. Travelers that hit the road early enjoyed dry but cloudy conditions with afternoon highs in the upper 40s and low 50s, right around average for late November. A wave of low pressure will slide through the region into Thanksgiving Day so expect some wet weather through Thursday evening and into Friday morning as our unsettled weather pattern stays in place. Thanksgiving Day isn’t looking like a postcard holiday weather-wise across the area with damp and dreary conditions expected for much of the day. The organized rain showers should be moving out by daybreak but with low level moisture lingering behind the departing wave of low pressure, look for patchy drizzle and low clouds to hang around for the majority of the day so it should be an ideal time to enjoy a holiday meal inside with family and friends. A light northwest breeze combined with the low clouds/moisture will keep things chilly with afternoon highs only topping out in the mid-40s. The big story for the remainder of the holiday weekend continues to be an early preview of winter temperatures as the coldest air of the season drops into the Ohio Valley. Early bird shoppers on Black Friday will need the heavier coat as temperatures dip down into the upper 20s although the lingering cloud cover may hold readings closer to freezing. Any way you slice it up it still should be a cold Friday morning. The colder air will remain in place through the day even with some sunshine returning as afternoon highs only recovering into the mid to upper 30s with a brisk west wind in place. It will feel more like the heart of the winter season as we close out November and kick off December for the second half of the holiday weekend. Temperatures should be in the mid to upper teens Saturday morning so anyone heading out to Kroger Field to tailgate before Kentucky and Louisville battle for the Governor’s Cup at Noon will really need to bundle up. It will truly be “football weather” with a cold afternoon expected with temperatures only recovering into the mid-30s as some higher clouds drift in so dress accordingly. A fast moving clipper system will dive into the region late Saturday bringing the potential for a light coating of snow into Sunday morning. Even though it will be in and out quickly and won’t have much moisture with it, there should be enough to possibly coat the ground and with temperatures plenty cold enough, slick roadways may be possible early Sunday. Sunshine will return but the cold air will be locked in with highs struggling into the upper 20s and low 30s while morning lows dip down into the teens for the first few days of December. Add in a moderate wind and at times our wind chill values will make it feel even colder so be prepared for this winter-like stretch into early next week.
