Rain, some snow ahead of Turkey Day; coldest since February follows
Nov 27, 2024
Rain to some snow Wednesday evening
As roads turn busy for the Thanksgiving holiday, rain has been the story across Central Indiana and much of the Midwest. Flight Delays have been minimal around here along with impacts on the roads. Rain continues being the story with areas west near Crawfordsville already seeing some light snow (see radar imagery below).
Anytime after 8-9 p.m., areas along and north of I-70 could see that rain mix with or turnover to a quick burst of wet snow. Should any accumulations occur, they will be limited mainly to grassy/elevated surfaces. A coating to 1.5" could be deposited after the change to snow. A few areas could go higher under narrow, persistent snow bands. This will be the story mainly well north of Indianapolis.
Cold gets established for Thanksgiving as we dry out
Precipitation moves out by sunrise Thursday with some peeks of the sun possible in the afternoon. Wear the extra jacket if you'll be doing any turkey runs/dashes in the morning. Highs will struggle to hit 40° for highs. It will be the coolest Turkey Day for Central Indiana since 2019.
It will also be breezy as the upper-level trough develops. This trough will push eastward into Central Indiana, providing the coldest air since February. Highs will not hit freezing for the weekend and lows will be in the teens. Some wind chills starting Friday AM in the mornings that follow could be in the single digits.
Highs will be running a good 15-18° below average for the extended holiday weekend. The trough will push out by the middle of next week where temps will rebound back toward normal by that point. It will likely the coldest open to December since 2010.
