HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Along with giving thanks, a well-stocked dinner table is one of the highlights of the Thanksgiving holiday for many.
Across the Triad, people are rushing to grocery stores to grab last-minute items for their Thanksgiving meals.
“I usually try to avoid it. Too many people,” said shopper Nicole Panaro.

Many shoppers said they try to avoid the grocery store the day before Thanksgiving because of the rush, but some just couldn’t avoid it this year.
“We just had to come up here and get a couple of things for Thanksgiving because I waited until the last minute,” said Panaro.
Many people were seen walking in and out of stores with their grocery lists in hand. One man said he had to navigate a crowd of people to shop.
Shopper Steven Gilchrist said, “I noticed inside the grocery store that it was very, very hectic to move around.”
Another shopper said a stop at one store might not be enough to grab what she needs for the holiday with the big meal less than 24 hours away.
“All the food is gone. I couldn't find no collard greens. Not cabbage either. We had to call people in the back to help us get some cabbage and collard greens, and they helped us out,” said shopper Essence Horne.
Some are still shocked by the prices on the food.
“I know people are rushing to the stores to try to get all the food that they can get for their families and stuff like that. I definitely feel like they're raising their prices, though,” said Horne.
“The prices on items are extremely high, but we've got to deal with it,” said Gilchrist.
According to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Thanksgiving dinner survey, a classic Thanksgiving meal for 10 will cost around $58.08. While it’s down 5% from last year, it’s still 19% higher than five years ago.
Shoppers are willing to endure the costs to keep their holiday staple foods on the table.
“Cranberry sauce, of course. Stuffing. We're going to do deviled eggs, mac and cheese. The usual. I mean, there's really nothing you can do about it. You got to have Thanksgiving. Anything else, you know?” said Panaro.
Some grocery stores in the Triad will be open with limited hours on Thanksgiving Day, including Food Lion, Whole Foods and Lowes Foods.
