ORIGINAL STORY: Driver killed after secondary crash on I-25 near Monument
WEDNESDAY 11/27/2024 1:22 p.m.
One person has died after a crash on I-25 near Monument on Wednesday morning, Nov. 27 that involved several vehicles and both sides of the interstate.
According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), on Wednesday at around 10:30 a.m. troopers received a call about a two-vehicle crash involving a Jeep and Subaru Outback on northbound I-25 at milepost 160. The drivers moved their vehicles to the left shoulder on I-25 where they got outside their vehicles to exchange information.
CSP said while drivers were exchanging information a pickup truck entered the scene at a high rate of speed and hit the cars on the shoulder. One of the drivers from the first crash was hit by the Subaru, he then landed in the southbound lanes of I-25 and was run over by traffic. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
CSP said one driver who allegedly hit the person remained on the scene but other drivers that may have been involved left the area. CSP asks that if you were a witness to the crash, or have any information and have not talked to investigators to contact CSP Dispatch at (719) 544-2424.
Northbound I-25 is closed from milepost 158 with a detour in place at West Baptist Road. Southbound I-25 is restricted to one lane.
Pictures from the Colorado Department of Transportation's COtrip website showed backups on the interstate in the area on Wednesday. As of 1:15 p.m., COtrip was reporting nearly an hour-long delay for northbound I-25 and almost a 30-minute delay for southbound drivers.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in heavy traffic and when approaching hazards. Secondary crashes happen when drivers cannot respond in time to avoid unusual situations and often those crashes are very dangerous as people are outside the protection offered by a vehicle.
FOX21 News has a crew on the way to the scene and will provide updates to this article once we get them.
