SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- On Tuesday, a local family met the man who received their son's heart and kidney as part of a life-saving donation. It marked the first time they were able to speak in person about the special bond. Lesley Nurse heard for herself the lifesaving power of her son's heart, two years after he was killed in a car accident. His name was Payton. “Payton made the decision to be an organ donor when he got his driver's license. He had just turned 17. He wanted to be an organ donor even then,” said Nurse of her son. The Cal State Northridge student's Kappa Alpha PSI membership taught him the meaning of brotherhood and giving his all to everyone. That's exactly what he did by donating his heart, kidneys and other tissues to four people who are all living because this strong young man had the foresight to look out for others. “The feeling that it gives you, that your loved one made such a difference in this world, that they saved multiple lives, right? With the tragic loss of their life that we have just become real advocates for organ donation,” said Nigel Nurse, the father of Payton. Around the time of the accident, Hartley Duffer was told that he had a next to zero chance to see his daughters grow up without receiving a heart and kidney transplant. Doctors relayed this message: "I can do everything I can to make you comfortable for as long as possible, and you will not live to see Christmas." "They were so warm, so welcoming, so understanding and just seeing how happy they were that I was able to continue living has given me a new purpose,” said Duffer, the recipient of Payton’s heart and kidney. With that purpose, Harley had a gift for the nurse family. Unable to bring their son back, he would remember Peyton with every beat of his heart, along with a new heartbeat joining the Duffer family -- his brand new daughter. “I talked to Nigel about it and he said he would be honored, so I named her Payton,” said Duffer. Duffer will join Peyton's portrait on a Rose Parade float, promoting the importance of being a donor so others may live.
