KDOT awarded $32m to promote lowcarbon construction materials
Nov 27, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will be receiving $32 million to promote the use of construction materials with low greenhouse gas impacts.
KDOT was selected as one of 39 states to receive funding through the Federal Highway Administration's Low Carbon Transportation Materials grant program, according to a press release from the Office of the Governor on Nov. 27. The funding will be used to modernize practices and focus on using materials like cement, concrete and asphalt that have lower levels of human-generated greenhouse gas emissions during production.
“KDOT’s program will be a model for how states can work with contractors to incorporate advanced materials while delivering projects that strengthen our local economies,” Kelly said.
The funds come as part of a $2 billion Biden-Harris project working to lower air pollution, specifically greenhouse gas emissions, through incentive funding for low-carbon construction materials and products used in transportation.

“This is significant funding that will drive innovation in construction practices,” KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed said. “By providing guidance and performance monitoring, KDOT can help contractors integrate cutting-edge materials into their projects and meet evolving industry standards.”
