EDDY COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – According to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, an 18-year-old died as the result of a single-vehicle car crash early Wednesday morning. The sheriff's office said their traffic unit responded to the crash at around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday on Hidalgo Rural Road north of Dark Canyon Road.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, Jiovanni Nevaeh Melendrez, was going southbound on Hidalgo Rural Road when they drove off the roadway onto the northbound shoulder, lost control, and rolled the vehicle. Melendrez was reportedly ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The sheriff's office said the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash.
